Embark on a journey through your family history in this beginner-friendly workshop on Thursday, October 9, 5:30pm at Campbell County Public Library. Whether you're just curious about your ancestry or ready to build your family tree, Ashley Torres, CCPL Reference Specialist, and Krisene Watson, CCPL Outreach Librarian, will guide you through the essential tools, techniques, and resources you need to get started.

NOTE: This is a computer-based, hands-on class so participants must have basic computer skills. The CCPL Computer Lab has 6 computers available. If you have a laptop, please bring it and note that on your registration.

  • Understanding what genealogy is and what it can reveal
  • Setting goals: What do you want to learn?
  • Starting with what you know: creating a simple family tree
  • Tips for interviewing relatives

Where to Find Records

  • Vital records (birth, marriage, death)
  • Census and military records
  • Church and cemetery records
  • Court and probate documents
  • Online databases vs. local archives

Making Connections with Ancestors

  • How to analyze documents to build a narrative
  • Common pitfalls in interpretation
  • Understanding naming patterns, timelines, and family structures
