Description

Western History. Art. Fascinating!
This vividly illustrated lecture will bring our Dramatic Moments: Frederic Remington's Early Engravings, 1882-1893, exhibit important insight and background.
Delve into Remington's early career as a magazine illustrator and correspondent assigned to the American Southwest. As a keen observer and emerging artist, Remington honed his ability in the 1880's to depict on paper scenes from the closing phases of the western frontier. Specifically Lee Silliman will discuss Remington's fascination with the horse, the Indians whose culture and freedom were being circumscribed, the African American soldiers sent to the Southwest after the Civil War, the Euro-American settlers who were establishing cattle ranches, and the vibrant allure of the Mexican life south of the border.
